I delivered a 29 week old baby boy on January 21, and so far things are going good. But 2 days ago his doctor told me they has put him on Ritalin to make him want to eat more and gain weight quicker. I've been reading up on the drug, and now I'm not so sure I want him on it. The only reason he is gaining weight is because he has the munchies! What's going to happen when I bring him home and he isn't getting Ritalin anymore and he won't eat and he crys because he wants drugs? Is there anyone out there that has had this happen to their baby? What did you do? Any opinions welcome, thank you. :)

WOW. I am shocked that your doctor would suggest that you start your newborn son on a drug that has proven to have psychological effects and heart problems!!! I would say that only *you* know what's best for your child. And your fears of withdrawal are well-founded, I have taken Ritalin as an adult and experienced withdrawal. I cannot imagine what it would do to a developing baby. I would suggest that when you do decide to get him off of it, you ween him gradually. And perhaps seek out the opinion of another doctor. Drugs are not always the best answer.

wow, i would definitely question your dr. find out as much information as u can. definitely get a second opinion.

i never had a premature baby, but i don't like all these medications on a baby so small. if it were my baby, i would tell them no drugs unless it was for an infection.
