Limited slip refers to the ring and pinion/axle set up in the differential that allows one wheel to spin while the other remains still for a short time then both wheels turn to give maximum traction and pulling power. Both wheels need to be able to turn at different rates to allow a car to go around a turn. 4-wheel drives sometimes have locking differentials (lockers) that make each wheel turn at the same rate. It makes for a near unstoppable off road rig.

It is the thing that locks or unlocks the back axle.

A locked differential is used for drag race cars, but a limited slip differential is for cars that go around corners.

If you want to beat someone in a straight line, Locked is the way to go.

If you want to beat someone around corners, limited slip is the way to go.

Limited slip basically allows one wheel to spin while the other doesn't move. Its a gear in the differential that can be changed.
