Remember that there are things such as the dynamics of Murphy's Law and self-fulfilling prophecies at work in our lives. The harder you try to avoid a contingency might just make it occur more readily. Sometimes just letting go and allowing for the best outcome is the best approach.

If you're dealing with an intelligent person, then yes. Just try to spot when they're trying to make their move, and you'll block it out.
