Mardi Gras is a French holiday. The words Mardi Gras mean "Fat Tuesday" in french. Mardi Gras Day is the day before ash Wednesday, but the celebration lasts much longer. It usually is celebrated for two weeks in march, but the date can vary depending on Easter. It's celebrated in many countries and in the U.S. it's big in New Orleans. It's main colors are purple, gold and green. People often wear costumes, especially masks, and of course the beads. Usually there is a big parade and the people on the floats toss beads to the crowd. Differnt places celebrate different ways. Each country, town or city has it's own way of celebrating. In France, there are usually big parties, and lots of food. In Italy it's called Carnival and there are giant outdoor parties. In New Orleans, were it once was amazing, the holiday is dying because some stupid spring breakers have thought up the idea that to get beads they should flash the parade- funny because Mardi Gras is supposed ot be a CHILDREN'S holiday. Now a bunch of people have stopped bringing kids to the parades because of that! The idea is spreading (I blame stupid spring breakers for this again) to other countries. Mardi Gras is supposed ot be a celebration of life. So please if you're goign to give a report about it, remember to say that the flashing thing is not part of Mardi Gras- that's be like calling Easter a holiday made up for bunnies. That's not what it's about, but it's what it's becoming.

Google it. Here's the basics: Mardi Gras (which is French for "Fat Tuesday") is the day before Ash Wednesday, which is when the Christian observation of Lent begins. Traditionally, people give up certain vices or abstain from certain foods during the observation of Lent, and Mardi Gras is kind of a "last hurrah" before Lent starts and those who observe Lent start giving up things they like or things that are "bad" for them.
