The city I live in has a smoking ban in bars and restaurants, but I've seen smokers in the designated smoking areas (usually outside) being trash-talked even though they're following the law. Anyone know what's going on? I say leave them alone if they're not doing anything wrong. . . .

I can't say I've noticed it.

But I'm prepared. If anyone were to say "second-hand smoke kills," I will calmly blow smoke in their face and respond "Damn. Not reliably."

Rosencrantz: FIRE FIRE FIRE Guildenstern: What are you doing Rosencrantz: Demonstrating the missuse of free speech... To answer your question, I don't think that smokers should be outcasted, but I don't think that they are. There are times and places where smoking is appropriate and times and places where it isn't. However, smokers are allowed to go anywhere anyone else can while they are not smoking. There are many many public places where I am not allowed to take my dogs including outdoor places like community football fields and the surrounding parks. Similarly there are many places that a smoker cannot take a lit cigarette. The principal reason for this is that it would be disrespectful to the other people in those areas. Most non-smokers don't enjoy the smell of smoke. In our paranoid society no one wants to be within severl miles of the nearest carcenogen. It is just the way things are. Increasing the amount of freedom for one person requires the infringement on someone elses, so we cater to the majority.

Because the non smokers that are bashing them feel that because they don't smoke and they don't agree with it they have a right to say whatever they want.

It happens to me all the time. I try to be very courteous to non smokers, and I only smoke outside, but yet that's not enough anymore, I still get rude remarks and snide looks. And it's not always because they don't want to smell my smoke because I've gotten the remarks and the comments before I have even lit my cigarette.

People just won't tolerate anything that go against what they believe.

everybody needs to calm the hell down, nd leave the smokers alone. If they wanna smoke, they should smoke. they bought the cigarettes and they want to die. Nobody bothers the non-smokers for doing stuff everybody hates. smokers should do what they want, as long as they are not bothering anybody by exhaling smoke in other people's faces.

Hey Lisa, know what else is disgusting? Using the bathroom. Should there be a ban on that as well? If a person wants to smoke then it's their right to. Leave 'em the hell alone.

You are sooooo right! When I was a smoker I felt bad when others put me down for it. It didn't help anything, either. I gave up my addiction to cigarettes when I chose to. Not because of the nasty comments from others.

The smokers aren't hurting you, if they are in designated smoking areas.

Let them be!

If they aren't smoking around anyone else then fair enough, but many smokers smoke around their children which is absolutely disgusting.

Why do cigarette smokers plop their butts down beside you and light up not even considering the fact that you are not smoking and not caring to ask? They will also walk up to a group of people with no one smoking and they will puff away if they already have a lit cancer stick or they will light up without regard to those around them. I believe smoking in public should be banned anyway! When a smoker so much as walks down the sidewalk with a lit cigarette he/she trails the toxic gases behind them like fog! I say if they want to commit slow suicide that's them but non-smokers should not be forcibly taken along for the ride!

Alot of non smokers are like that. People like that are just ignorant in my opnion. I realize they dont like it, but if they dont, stay away from it. Thats why there are smoking areas and non smoking areas. All I can say is, if they dont like it, stay the heck away from it. Dont go around it, and then complain about it.*

I think it is because many people think they are so much better than others and are not happy unless they are putting someone down. They need a good kick in the ***. I listen for people like that and make sure everyone around them knows how much of an asshole they are. I don't have a problem with a confrontation with them if they continue. Don't that just make your blood boil? I can't handle ignorant people like that...
