sounds like the brake light switch is not working, this switch should be located at the top of the brake pedal and its very easy to replace.

Assuming your tailgate lights are common with the side brake lights then there must be a wiring or similar fault. Car lights are susceptible to dirt and corrosion so make sure the bulb holder is clean and free from rust. You can check if you are getting power to the lights by putting a meter on one while someone presses the brake. If there is no power then I'd recheck the fuse and all wiring you can get at. It is possible that your tailgate lights are on a separate fuse so check that....

Generally its a bulb, sometimes the brake fuse will cause the problem, also you may have a short in the wiring.

If it's not the bulbs or the fuse, there could be a break in the wire or a small electrical problem further down the line.
Go to see a professional don't try it yourself, there's allot of watts going in to those bulbs. Don't fry yourself!!!

These rear light probably have a common earth.
You need to find this earth point and make sure it's a good connection.
Also try running another wire as an earth to one of the lights.
If it then works, then it's an earthing problem..
