First, you should know that, speaking in the broadest generalities, the university system in the US is stronger than that of Europe. But of course there are some fine universities in Europe.

Those that tend to be known in the US include:

Oxford (UK)
Cambridge (UK)
University of Paris (which is the Sorbonne)
Trinity College (Ireland)

Others that are sometimes known include:

University of London (which includes such powerful schools as the London School of Economics, University College London, etc.)
Charles University (Czech Republic)
Jagellonian University (Poland)
INSEAD (France. It's an MBA school)
St. Andrews (Scotland)

The most prestigious universities, from a European's perspective, tend to include (in no particular order):

Oxford
Cambridge
University of London
University of Paris
Instituto de Empresa (Spain)
IMD (Switzerland)
Esade Business School (Spain)
Erasumus University (Netherlands)
St. Andrews (Scotland - an up and comer)
ETH Zurich (Switzerland)
Ecole Normale Superieur (France)
Edinburgh University (UK)
Ecole Polytechnique (France)
Geneva University (Switzerland)
Manchester University (UK)
Trinity College, Dublin
