First get the car fixed, that means draining the petrol tank all the petrol leads then get a mechanic to drain the engine and change the filters. After that and you get your car working drive over your wife and tell the police it was an accident she tried to stop you by standing infront of the car.

This should not be a serious problem
1 Drain out ALL the fuel this can be pumped out with an independant pump at the engine end or the car.
2 Put in about 2 gallons of fresh diesel
3 Drain the fuel filter and manually fill it with fresh diesel from the can
4 Now start it up and let it tick over for a few minutes to allow the diesel to flush through. It will be a bit difficult to start but it should go eventually
4 Go to the petrol station and pull up beside the diesel pump and fill it right up
5 If 4 went sucessfully the car is likely to be OK
6 Dispose of the contaminated fuel responsibly at you local council disposal point they will have a facility
Now good luck
AND
Dont kill her many many drivers do this on many occasions. My garage had to drain out two today

The main reason the car stopped running is because the pure petrol would not ignite under compression so there may not be a any permanent damage (No guarantee though). You will need to drain the fuel and replace the filter(s) then put a decent amount of diesel in it and prime the system (sometimes a manual pump). Spend ages trying to start the car. We flattened the battery when I did this but eventually it started and ran fine after the first tank full.
A garage would flush the whole fuel system and I would advise you to get quotes as it may be cheaper than you think.
Maybe the spoiled diesel could be used for a pyre of some kind?

I seem to remember there being a Top Gear episode when they looked at this in depth. They bought an old car, filled it with diesel (it was a petrol engine) and ran it until it stopped working. Then, instead of taking it to a garage and replacing the filters etc... they simply drained the petrol tank, re-filled it with petrol and started it up again. After a few 'coughs', the engine worked fine and testing by the AA inspector showed everything to be hunk-dory.
Don't dispose of the wife. She may have miles left in her and with a new lick of paint could find you a fair few quid on the second-hand market. Unfortunately though, it is true that all the depreciation occurrs within the first few miles so her book value may be somewhat diminished...

Excuse Me? I've done a similar mistake. Almost anyone can.
After racing around all day, my daughter and I had to party. Quick petrol stop (£10.00) and speed ed away. Got to the venue OK but coming back OH NO! Car will not badge. Rescue called and diagnose given. Damn!!
Got towed home as the estimation of the rescue man to the garage works will be around £300.00. Blow that.
Called an independent mechanic and voila. It only cost £95.00 for it to be drained and pump all the diesel in the system.
Am still alive. Hubby did not even call me stupid (tho he might have muttered it).
Anyone can make a mistake your wife included. RAC will tell you it happens all the time even with the male specie.
Lesson learnt "more haste, more expense".

The engine should be fine. You will have to drain the tank, drain and change the filter(s), purge the system of petrol (loosen lines and crank the engine), fill the tank with diesel and bleed the system. This happened with a HUMMER in Iraq. A pain in th ****, but no permanent damage.
Cheers!

My next door neighbor done this, not once but three times, we siphoned the petrol out and put half a tank of diesel in, and each time it started OK and is still running fine and that was about 10 months ago.

You have every right in the world to be upset and frustrated at the inexplicable failure of a very simple and straightforward task.
The issue of clearing and cost has been well covered above, although i recommend you shop around and get the best deal (dont leave it to the wife, she will only walk into a garage and say "I dont know much about cars, but... " and their eyes will light up like a light bulb.)
Now, if only she had realised her error and not started the engine... would have saved you a LOT of time and money

the car must be checked by a mechanic . you may be lucky but it could of damaged the engine . nissan diesels suffer this fate when petrol put in by mistake . if the worst comes to the worst you can bump off the wife and put her in the boot . if she is fat even better it will get you more money back when the car is weighed for scrap !

Petrol should`nt do any harm to diesel engine,it will clean the insides, just drain your tank and put diesel back in, if it was the other way round you would have problems.
