... i have a windows xp machine, and i need to edit the registry for my internet explorer... but everytime i try to run regedit.exe (or reged32.exe), an error box pops up saying that another program is already using that file, when clearly, i know that it's not open...
i already suspect that there might be a virus on my computer, and that could be causing this... but before i assume that, is there any other reason because of which i can't open the registry editor?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully you've already tried rebooting the machine, and retrying regedit. Failing this...
Try opening up explorer and going to...
c:\windows\system32 and running regedit.exe straight from there.
You could also try, right click on taskbar, go to task manager, and have a look at your running processes. See if it's in there. If it is - end it, and load it as normal. If not, it's likely to be spyware causing this to run. You could also.... start --> Run --> msconfig as there may be something in the start up processes causing regedit to run hidden when your pc boots. if so, untick the box there also. Hope this helps

I would say try it in safemode. its possible I can help you as i have experience with fixing peoples infected pc or any other pc issues that friends have had,, lemme know
if you have a antivirus program i would suggest a virus scan if not then there are many free online scans that can either suggest what to do or in some cases delete them from your pc.
In the past i have used this and found it to be one of the best

to edit the registry you need a advanced level of computer experience,so if you fall into this catorgery then its fine
however i have been using p.cs on and off for 18 years and i try never to edit the registry as theres a chance you can delete something you may need or even worse
if you suspect a virus then you must scan and locate the infection ,a simple scan with your antivirus software should locate the problem, run this is safe mode as theres less places for the virus to hide
then go to http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/,and run the online registry scan ,this is a safer way than doing it manually, and theres no need to use regedit.exe
good luck

Click on START, then RUN, type 'regedit' (without the quotes and no .exe). This should work OK.

There is no need to type regedit.exe. It's incorrect command. Exe means[extension] Just type regedit.
