You are right about alibaba.com. There is no way for you to know whether the companies that advertise on that site are the actual manufacturers or trading companies or outright fraudsters. That said, there are legitimate companies on alibaba that are reaching out to find customers. In order to identify a viable supplier you need to have an effective screening process.

Let's use China in our example... The first step is a phone call. If you don't speak Chinese this will be difficult. Ask them questions about their business - annual sales, core competencies, main products sold, number of technical and QC staff, R&D capabilities, do you have your own factory or is the product produced somewhere else, etc. If they are able to field these questions well and to your satisfaction, then you MIGHT have yourself a legit company and a viable supplier. The million dollar question is "If I come visit you will I be able to walk through the manufacturing facility and see your production line". If the answer is anything but a resounding "Yes" followed by a "welcome to visit our factory anytime", take it as a red flag and move on to the next supplier on the list.

By the way, this is not a bluff. At some point you must visit. No screening process is effective without in-person vendor visits, either by you or by someone you trust. You need to meet the folks you are going to be sending your hard-earned money to and make sure they are for real, possess the capabilities they claim to have, and that you like them.

Start planning your trip to the Far East now. Screen enough potential suppliers so that you have at least half a dozen vendor visits lined up. Go to GlobalSources.com China Sourcing Fairs and plan your visit to coincide with an electronics exhibition. Exhibitions and trade shows are the best way to find legitimate suppliers and viable business partners, but the best shows for your needs take place in Asia. Visit this site:

At the end of the day, you are ostensibly in the business of selling, marketing, and distributing electronics. Buying direct from overseas is a full-time job in itself. That is not your business. Why not hire someone else who is in the business of sourcing products, identifying the best suppliers, quality control, logistics, import management, etc. and have them manage your purchasing and importing for you? You may pay slightly more per item that you import, but in the long run you will save money, time and resources that would be better spent on growing your customer base and revenue. Also nowadays most sourcing companies make the entire process completely transparent - you have a direct relationship with your supplier and you know the FOB price. What's more, buying through a "middle" company transfers much risk from you to them - you are buying from a U.S. company instead of a China company. Plus a legitimate sourcing company can extend you credit, such as 30% deposit with balance paid 30 days after delivery.

I do this for a living. Feel free to call me if you need more advice or suggestions: 212-847-7175.
