battery charge for a new system running normal applications can be estimated as,

2 hrs > 17" screen
3 hrs > 15.4" screen
3 1/2 hrs > 14.1" screen
4 1/2 hrs > 12.1" screen

the intel processors consume less power for same to same application
34 watts rated for a core 2 duo
the l2 cache, architectiure n all matter

however, if portability is a big issue ... & u'r going to be opeating on batteries for long periods, best option would be to buy a regular 6 cell & additional 9 cell as spare
use 6 cell for regular work
keep 9 cell fully charged before travel & carry along

changing batteries is just a clicks job, under 15 seconds !

It will depend a lot on what you are doing when it is running on battery. Burning or running CD/DVD's will eat up battery power like crazy. A brand new 6 cell battery fully charged should run your machine between 2.5 - 3 hours. A 9 cell will be more between 3.5 - 4 hours. It will also depend on if you are using wireless, Bluetooth, etc. If you aren't running off the wireless network card, disable it and turn off the wireless signal detection, this will help reduce power consumption.

This will depend upon the computer and the battery. The more extras on the computer, the shorter the battery will last.

It will also depend upon what you do with the computer. Using memory take little electricity, but using a harddrive does.

How long is a piece of string?
To know how long a battery will last you need to know its capacity in milliamp-hours and how many milliamps the laptop consumes.
