It depends on how well the poet is known and whether I've read their poetry before. The best way for a poet to build a reputation is to get poems in magazines like The New Yorker and Atlantic Monthly. When you have credits there, it's much easier to get a publisher interested in your collection. Get THE POET'S MARKET to find out who is buying poetry.

One of the best known poets of our time is Baxter Black. This cowboy poet is on many radio shows, goes to poetry competitions and regularly gets paid for appearances. It's not unusual for patrons to pay $50 to see him. His books and audio CDs are wonderful.

I would not. There's a LOT of poetry out there, and a lot of it's mediocre. Start by setting up a website to build up some cred. Put select parts of poems to entice your audience to buy to read the rest. Try to get a reputation going first.

I have tons of poetry books in my house. But I was an English major in college so I'm a little biased. :)
