I had fair luck, iced it down, got it cold scraped most of it off with a knife. Then applied tar remover, from an auto part store, finished up with krud cleaner and lots of clean rags. Took hot water and soap to get rid of a slight brown color
Had to clean the whole bottom of a bucket seat.

Go to a NAPA store or a store like it & ask for a can of tar remover. It works great. You can try cleaning it with some Dawn dish soap, but it may not work. I use Dawn dishsoap for doing dishes, as well as removing stains from many things but I never tryed removing tar with it. Good luck!!!

I can't say I have used it on upholstery, but WD-40 will break down the tar. I use it on hard floors, glass and the carpet in my car.
another thing you can try, are baby wipes, the alcohol should help break it down too.

I would try paint thinner, but you should ask your local car detailing guy what they use.
