I actually have both a Hunter and Rogue on an RP Server

My Hunter is rarely flagged so I don't know about his ability to survive an ambush. But I can tell you that when my Rogue ambushes a Hunter (I usually wait until he is attacking someone else), I usually have no problem finishing him off.

A Rogue excels at melee damage dealing. If he can get in close to you, there is little you can do to get him loose. An Ice Trap may catch him (although, we can see them) but it won't hold him long enough.

Unfortunately you can't manipulate the behavior program of players the way you can mobs. If you have some relative noob who you can get to focus attention on your pet you're all set. Otherwise, you have to hope that you and your pet together can take down a target before he takes you down - against a rogue that's pretty dicey because of their high DPS. Hunters can wear mail at higher levels, an option you should strongly consider - especially considering some of the sweet greens dropping in Outlands these days.

If it makes you feel better, cloth wearers are invariably toast in PvP vs a Hunter.

hunters are great but everything has a weakness. you get in close with hunter and you've taken his greatest advantage. kill the hunter and the pet will fall.
