I'm a sewing machine tech and can tell you many things can be causing your problem. Tensions, maybe your not threading it right, belt is broken or loose, etc. If its a nice machine, spend the 40-50 dollars and have it serviced. Cleaned oiled and adjusted. And have them show you whats wrong.
My guess though from your vague description is that since its locked up that thread is wrapped around somewhere and it needs to be taken out. It most likely was threaded wrong or the tensions, either top or bottom was or is too loose. This can also knock the timing of the hook and needle off which would need to be fixed by a tech.
Good luck.

When was the last time it was oiled? Remember it needs to be oiled about once a month. Have you tried manually turning the fly wheel? Sometimes the needle gets wedged in thick material. Have you removed the bobbin case? Maybe the bobbin thread got wrapped arounf the bobbin cover. If none of those hints work, a professional can.

maybe the belt that is connecting the balance wheel(drive wheel) to the motor got displaced, come loose or it is not taut.

the answer should be in the manual. if you can't fix it yourself then bring it to the manufacturer or a repair shop.

goodluck!
