Several million believe bush, and even more believe in alien abductions. What's thy mystery? God created Man because the monkey was a disappointment to him.

Oh, I believe it. But watch out, the Scientologists will claim much higher numbers than that. They usually claim somewhere in the ballpark of 10 million... but we can all go to http://adherents.com and see that their claim just isn't true.
People believe because they get brainwashed. I'm sure the "tech" does help a few people. L. Ron Hubbard WAS a science fiction writer after all. A published one! So he had at least a passable way with words. His stuff is like one big collection of "self help" guides coupled with legitimate SOUNDING "techniques" (which are anything BUT), so people buy into it.
And when I say, they LITERALLY buy. They buy into Scientology for thousands and thousands of dollars. Once they start paying, they've got to believe that all this money is being put to good use, so of course they will convince themselves that the more they pay, the more it's working.

Not sure where you got that number. Scientology tends to report anyone who as ever taken a course as a scientologist, when in fact most of them aren't active members. If there really are 50,000 active members, that's still only a miniscule percentage of the world's population. And many of those active members will leave when they figure out they're being scammed, or when they run out of money.

a similar way all different religions benefit converts. in terms of risk, it rather is not extra or much less ridiculous than the different faith, the only distinction is the others have been around so long many have no thought the thank you to stay with out them. the version between fable and faith is the style of human beings than have faith it in. the version between faith and superstition is that basically one calls for a while, money and soul, and actively condemns different ideals as fake on a similar time as the two destitute of evidence it itself is real.

Internationally according to my sources it's well into the millions these days.... and growing....especially here in 2007.
