A car that has an electric engine as well. The fossil fuel powered engine charges the battery for the electric and stops running til the battery gets low or you try to accelerate faster than the electric can handle. It cuts fuel costs by minimizing the use of the fuel powered engine.

"Hybrid" means made up of two or more things. In the case of hybrid cars, two methods of powering the car are mixed, usually gasoline and electric.

There are several ways to do it:
- have electric motors that assist a primary gasoline engine (capturing brake energy, for example),
- or have the eletric motors as the primary drivers of the wheels, with a gasoline engine used to charge the batteries.
- other various combinations

The primary (and overly-touted) benefit is that these cars, because they use batteries instead of gas for some functions, therefore use less gas, thereby increasing mileage and being better for the environment.

Most current hybrids are still primarily gasoline-based, with electric assists. The next step is the "plug-in" hybrid, which uses primarly an electric motor, with gas used only to run a generator to keep it charged. The "plug-in" part is that it will connect to a household plug to charge, thereby making it primarily an all-electric vehicle in operation. If trips are under the maximum range of the battery, the gas engine would never come on at all. These types of cars will start being available in a year or three.
