England did not adopt the Euro because everything in this country works like clockwork and our railways, health service, beef and poultry industries, etc are the envy of Europe and the world. Why change that?
In short the Government caved into populist opinion. Not to worry though currently the £/UK economy is functioning reasonably well (albeit ignoring the fact that compared with the rest of the EU we have the highest rates of drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, obesity and work the longest weeks).
However next time Boom and Bust Britain goes into a recession the advantages of constant supply costs from Euroland (assuming we have not outsourced our entire manufacturing industry to China) may become somewhat clearer. At this stage we will probably try and throw our lot in with that lot over the channel...
They will of course reject us because we rejected them (as happened when we first joined the EC) and we will probably end up joining in 2020 or something. Such is our schizoid relationship with the continentals.
Regarding England as opposed to Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland the "United" Kingdom will probably not all go in at the same time. My money is on Scotland following the Irish lead. I suppose the real question is here is how much longer will the UK continue to exist in its current form? Scottish Independence hangs in the balance next year...
And also ... How much longer will these fantasists persist in deluding themselves that Britain is a continent. NEWSFLASH the Empire is over, we lost Rhodesia in 1979, George Bush and Co are religious fanatics on the other side of the world and the continentals genuinely really aren't out to subject us all to slavery.

1st of all it's Britain, not England and the British didn't adopt the Euro because the pound was the most powerful currency in the world and they knew that the Euro would've been weaker than the pound and also, they're too proud of their nation and so wouldn't want to get rid of the pound as it has the queens face on it and defines Britain. We also got given the chance to join the Euro again but refused it again. Look at the economies of the countries using it since they've accepted. It's not too good is it?

Denmark were brave enough to have a referendum and said no to the Euro because they had seen what happened in the UK in 1992 when we joined the ERM and the Treasury got a right hammering because people (ironically mainly in the London money markets) were making shedloads out of selling pounds. The Euro will only come through attrition as some large supermarket chains and others have started accepting over the counter it already. After that it's inevitable. Not for a while yet though.

I think the bulk of the British people are still skeptical (and rightly so) of the EU and the Euro. Ties to the US and the Commonwealth force them to second guess turning over any real sovereign rights to mere Continentals. The Pound Sterling is still more valuable and a symbol of British economic power and pride. Don't give up your nation Britain! Do you really want to lose English Common Law for French "justice"?

Now lets see...... would you like the legal USA dollar to be official currency of:
Belgium, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Finland......
who's Governments are in charge of their own national deficits (loans and debts) ect.
France and Germany have already breached the spending rules and gone over 3% deficit.... and how can you set a European interest rate when all these countries never have economies which stay the same... all countries have difficult and good times... and you need to be able to set the interest level at rate suitable for your country... not just one for the whole lot (unless its Federal Government..... but no way will England want to be run by the Germans and French).

Don't you mean Britain?? There's much more to Britain than England you know.
As for the Euro...what's wrong with the pound?..'If it aint broke-don't fix it.'
Most Britons want to stay out of Europe but the Government won't hold a referrendum on it because they know they would lose.
We don't want to be ruled by Brussels. They are already interfering with our decisions, rulings are being questioned be the (lefty) European court of criminals' .(er sorry..human) rights.
Accepting the Euro would be one step nearer to losing Britain's sovereignty. This must NOT happen.

Because the majority wont accept it and rightly so this isn't just about trade its about our sovereignty as a nation . We have been lied to on many occasions about what the EU is really about . Its time we had a referendum about membership because i believe we would be better of out far richer for a start .
