A slave making the run to Canada actually had a lot of help both in the South and the North. In the South many runaways were given directions by the songs the slaves sang as they worked and food was passed to them by sympathizers.
Runaways had to memorize instructions because most could not read. They would meet up with a conductor on the underground railroad who might be either white or black and escorted through the most dangerous areas to safe houses.
By the way, the underground railroad had nothing to do with tunnels or actually being underground. Like the French underground during WWII, it was simply secret and a resistance movement of sorts. Many of the conductors were escaped slaves themselves, but others were Quakers or sympathetic whites. Officially the Quakers were not involved in helping runaways, but unofficially some were up to their necks in the underground.
Food, supplies and safe houses were available all along the route to Canada. Slaves who didn't connect with the underground railroad tended to be caught and returned or killed. Occasionally the cover of an underground railroad safe house was blown and an alternate had to be used. Because it happened, there were many alternates available.
By the way, not many children under age five were taken in by the railway. They were considered too young for the trip and infants, in particular, could betray the whole group.

There were a number of reasons why most survived being enslaved. First of all, there were a great number of plantation owners who were not like what you see on tv and read in textbooks. They treated their slaves much better than others, giving them more than an adequate amount of food, giving them better living conditions as far as housing and healthcare, so to speak. The slaves that lived on huge plantations owned by strict owners had it much more difficult. Religion was usually not allowed so slaves developed a secret code so that their masters had no idea what they really meant. Even though most were malnourished and beaten due to slacking off, disobeying, or simply used as an example/warning to the rest.......slaves helped each other out when possible. They would sometimes try to sneak others food, teach them, or simply give them HOPE saying that soon enough they would become free. Also masters knew that in order to get the most out of each slave (which cost them a lot of money), the enslaved needed to be healthy enough to live till 50 years old or so. A dead slave or majorly injured slave gives them nothing.

Well I've learned alot o\about that in history. I learned that they were very couragous and hopeful. They might have stole food from their slaveholder or they might have even had a nice slaveholder thta gave them atleast a little break during the day to eat good food. If youii were a slave, well it would seem hard. And it was. Many people didn't know what to do at that time. Many died, many lived for a few more years after that but almost everyone on the plantation died. If you have anymore questions look on this link:

They survived escaping to Canada either by using the Underground Railroad (a series of tunnels and buildings where whites helped the slaves by hiding them and transporting them), or else on their own strength and will (if they did it alone).

They were fed and given a home to stay in. During the time of slavery, they did a lot of the physical labour, but they were kept healthy. They were more useful alive than dead, so they were kept alive. The poor people sure didn't have much of a life, though.
