As far as defining the decade: 1)Breakfast Club defined the 80's youth, best ensemble cast for that era. 2)Politically, Spies Like Us was the best satire on the arms race against the USSR, although kind of silly at times. 3) Karate Kid was the rooting for the underdog movie of the decade. 4) Chirstopher Guest's The Big Picture satirized Hollywood in the 80's while at the same time truthfully depicting it.
As far as best films in the 80's regardless of of definition: Comedies of originality include Tootsie, Crocidile Dundee, Better Off Dead, Parenthood, and Raising Arizona.
Non-comedies include Raiders of the Lost Ark, Full Metal Jacket, Amadeus, Empire of the Sun, Terminator, and Blood Simple.
