I have always loved longer names for women. I enjoy the classical feel it gives them, plus depending on the scene they can be called by a wider variety of nicknames to infer closeness.
Examples:
Samantha- with her male friend and he lovingly calls her sammy, or her brother yells yo sam, or she's about to be reprimanded by someone who enunciates SA-MAN-THA
Elizabeth, lizzie, beth, liza, whatever the name can change with the passing of time as well when your younger the name is shortened.
Then again you do have a Cassandra saying this.

I am a fantasy writer, so I too have some pretty fantastical names for my characters. Before I suggest some, I would like to say thatyou can have some pretty weird names, but if they are vivid characters, it doesn't matter. Take Hogwarts for instance, and Hermione. Hagrid, Dumbledore. If these weren't fantastic characters, the names would be laughable.
So, some suggestions...have you ever thought about turning a real name backwards??? Like Benjamin could become Nimajneb, or Skyler becomes Relyks. See...or you could just say Tronotorn, or Gyllabineth, or just simply Svarr?

As a reader I hate to read name that I have no idea how to pronounce. Simpler names allow a reader to remember them better which benefits everyone. You don't want a long name that nobody can read like Fingfigtalsintanmist.....just made that up. Keep it simple and easy. It also depends on the genre of the book.
Realistic fiction-- (girl) Clair, Sara, Hayley, Samantha (boy) John, Dylan, Chris
Fantasy-- (girl) Mara, Kendra, Allana (boy) Zander, George,

I can tell you a lot of names but there is another way to help you. Just write "names" in Google (or Yahoo of course) and the first two things that you'll see will be "Behind the name..." and "Baby names!...". There are both very usefful, belive me! (I'm writting a novel too)

What is your genre of novel? Give a little background on what the char will be like or anticipated to be like. This is if you are looking for creative. Otherwise, I think a name is a name. It is what you (the writer) make of that name.

My name is Melissa...But who would want that name for a chick in a novel?? What is your novel's topic or genre? That would help to know. I personally like the names "Alexis" or "Emma".

I have always liked the name Aurora (I guess it's because Sleeping Beauty was my favorite Disney movie growing up...and still is). I also like Nikki.
