my front room walls - having some trouble with the re-decorating.

Very funny. However, if your walls are wall paper you can rent at your local do-it-yourself centre a steamer that heats up the wall paper steam till it loosens up the wall paper. Then a coat of glue remover after that. If its just paint then you do a smoothing sanding or cover it with Killz. Or my all time favourite wall cover for any wall imperfections is Acoustic wall finish. Renting a machine and blowing it on and materials can fix bad ugly walls for around 200 bucks, perhaps less depending upon your size of your room and price of equipment.
Oh, this wall finish I refer to is that speckled finish or orange peal finish you usually see in doctors and attorneys offices. It's actually real easy to use and learn how to use in just a couple minutes.
