Mix the cereal in with the applesauce. Use a little water, formula, or breast milk to make it as thin as he needs. At his young age, eating solids is just for supplementation of his formula and/or breast milk. Once a day to start with is best and only a couple tablespoons at first. His little tummy will not be able to digest a lot at first. Gradually, you can begin to increase the amount and the number of times he eats solids. Generally speaking, by 9 months, many babies are eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner with bottles or nursings in between (4-5 times a day). All babies are different and the guidelines are just for guidance and not what a baby has to be doing. Nutritionally speaking, a baby only requires formula and/or breast milk until about the age of 6 months. Until 12 months, babies still get a lot of their nutrition from formula and/or breast milk.

We just came back from the doctor and I was told that I could give my baby rice and applesauce as well. She is 4 months.

Introduce one item at a time to make sure there are no allergic reactions.

I put the rice in a bottle with milk. 1 teaspoon for every 2 ounces.
I can understand why he is not eating the rice cereal. I tasted it a few days ago with the milk and it is quite nasty! lol but hey my daughter gulps it down! Introduce it in the milk and gradually to spoon.

If you insist on using a spoon then put the rice mixture on the spoon with applesauce on the tip so that is the first thing he tastes. He likes sweets already!

Good luck!

1. Only give him cereal until he is 8 or 9 months old.

2. Applesauce is full of sugar and is not good for newborns.

3. If he is not taking the cereal it may mean that he is not ready. Wait two weeks and try it again. Babies have something called "tounge thrust" and cannot eat solid foods like cereal until they overcome this reflex.

4. Feed him one - two tablespoons of powdered cereal mixed with formula or breastmilk twice a day after he has been nursed.

5. Babies go through a growth spurt at 4 months and seem like they are starving all the time. Try feeding him breastmilk or formula more often until he is ready to eat the cereal.

Everybody has the same problem with their newborns...don't worry, it will be OK and he will be eating like a champ in three or four months!!!

Maybe to get him to take the cereal too, put some applesauce on the front of the spoon and have the spoon filled with cereal... that could trick him into eating it!

Or maybe the rice cereal is mixed too thick for him? Try to make it the same consistancy of the applesauce he eats and that might help too.

Just keep trying. Alot of the time, it takes several times of a baby trying a food, before they get used to the taste. You might should have waited to give him the applesauce. You usually want to wait to try the fruits, until they have acquired a taste for other things first, since fruits are sweet. I feed my 5 month old baby food or cereal, 2-3 times a day. I just feed her maybe a couple tablespoons worth of solid food each time. I try not to feed her very much so that she still eats enough formula.

Try mixing the cereal a little thinner using the same milk you feed him with. The rice cereal is started first to see if the baby can digest it easily. Then apple sauce is next. Just plain applesauce, NOTHING else yet. Your Dr will have you start single fruits, one at a time for three or four days. Its how to tell if your baby has an allergy. If he is tolerating the apple, give him a little for lunch, but keep trying the rice cereal , thin like gruel to start with, at night. Then follow with the rest of his milk. I bet he will sleep through the night!

The baby cereal is YUCK! Mine always have to have a fruit mixed in with it. I would stay away from applesauce unless baby has a hard time making stools. If you aren't careful you'll have loose baby stools for days at a time. As far as feeding the baby, I say you feed them as much as they need to be fed. When my children were 4 months old they ate between 2-4 jars of baby food per day! Depends on the kid.

If you can wait till 6mo, wait. If not, Try another cereal like oatmeal. According to my doctor and research, they should only have cereal (no applesauce) till 6mo.

2 times a day about 1-2 Tablespoons of cereal mixed with about 4-5 tablespoons of breast milk or formula (It should be runny at first) then you can gradually increase the thickness.

Rice cereal sometimes gives constipation, so beware of any changes in his bowel movements

Ok this is what I done. I went to the local Walmart and bought a cereal bottle. You can mix the cereal and applesause together and put int inside the bottle. The bottle looks short and fat. The nipple on it has a much bigger hole so the ceral can pass through. It works perfectly and not mess to clean up all over there cute little faces. I got 2 in qa package for about 3-5 dollars.

Try standing above him so that he looks up at you and when he opens his mouth to smile place the spoon of rice cereal mixed with fruit or veggies in the middle, kind of towards the back, of his tongue (not to far as this will make him gag).
This will work, but just keep in mind rice cereal is not extremely important to give him, it is a form of teaching him to eat solids and get used to it. It does not have an extraordinary amount of nutrients.
