I'm a dual UK-USA citizen and am curious to know how one can go about changing one's name. I have an American and a British passport. I know that theoretically, all Americans have the right to change their names at will, and in England common law allows you to adopt whatever name you want whenever you want, but what about the practical details? Is it possible to go by one name as a British citizen and another as an American? or does one have to change one's name in both countries at the same time? How does one go about changing passports, etc. I'm not necessarily going to do this. I'm just very interested to know how this is done at the present time.

SGT. D, I'm just curious to know how it is done. As I already mentioned, this is not a decision that I have made at this time. I am proud of my own name. If I ever do decide to change my name, it would probably be to add extra names, rather than actually changing my first and middle name which I already have.

Change your name in the UK following thier legal process, then bring the paperwork to the US and change you name here. It is a straightforward, but expensive process.
