Do you prefer the sound of a single coil pickup,or humbucker? The fender comes with single coil(easy to replace)and that imfamous single coil "hum" you get with them.I own an Epiphone Les Paul studio and love it!!Very versatile, probably the choice for you seeing the music you will be playing.Try them BOTH out at your music store. The feel and sound will tell ya right away.(at least it did for me)If you go with the Fender, don't fear the "hum" from the single coil pickups, there is a $20 plate you can buy that goes under pick guard that elimanates it!! It just came out and it REALLY WORKS!! Try them both....you might find you want both!! Good luck!! Oh,and "bleed the freak" its a split coil Humbucker you're right, can be single or used together..single=that 5hz hum!!

Les Pauls are great depending on the amp and Strats are lovely sources of infinite tone variations. But Les Pauls are better suited to lead playing or blues and they can be really bottomy. Strats are tough for rhythm due to the dang volume knob being right in the perfect place to get knocked and they turn down. The bridge is a whole different animal and any sort of anchoring of your strumming hand on it is a delicate matter so damping your strum can be a pain.

Why haven't you considered a Fender Telecaster? You get a nice mixture of the two and an excellent rhythm guitar that can be sweet, snarl, twang and jingle jangle. I've had many guitars and the Tele is the only one I've never thought of parting with because its a workhorse that never flakes out.

Or you can check out the Epi SG's or even a nice used Gibson SG, they play brighter than the Les Paul. I recommend a good look at the Telecaster though.

Go with the Les. I prefer Les Paul's over strat's because of the raised bridge. Fender's have a lot lower action that a Les, but here's what you should do. Go to your guitar store, play both, then buy what you like. Name isn't the only factor in buying a guitar, you need to get what feels best for you, or else it could be an expensive mistake.

or vice versa buy a strat and put the les paul humbuckers on, seems a lot cheaper haha. either way, i dont think the les paul's neck would affect your playing that much, probably take about a week or two to get used to is all

The Strat is better for what you want. Les Pauls are the best for melodic lead playing but a bit dull and murky for other things, and feel clumsier.

A Parker Fly is better than both. More versatile, and session men like them as they don't weigh too much. The Fender weighs a ton and doesn't half make your neck ache.
