and why was that done. I remember growing up and watching it and only Big Bird knew he existed, then all of a sudden everyone can see him??? thats a W T F moment surely! Whats the story here people?

I must have been one stupid kid cuz I never knew he was supposed to be invisible.

They only assumed he was imaginary cause he'd always leave when someone else came along.


1. snuffleupagus

Debuting in 1971 on Sesame Street, Snuffleupagus was a woolly mammoth-like creature with long eyelashes. At first adults mistakenly believed he was Big Bird's imaginary friend because Snuffy shuffled off (presumably because he suddenly remembered he might have left the oven on) every time Big Bird left the scene to gather witnesses. In 1985 Big Bird finally proved that his shaggy friend was not a figment of his imagination.

I can't remember when but I remember when he was shown it was a bit ta-do. I think I even stayed home form school. (yeah I had cool parents they even let me go to school late so I could see the world premiere of Michael Jackson's Bad video)

The reason he stopped being invisible is because the show's creators were worried that kids would believe that grown-ups wouldn't believe them when they were telling the truth. It was an important step in helping kids to report abuse.
