.the first time republicans were in a position where their lies to real questions would be too obvious.

Some people do it to evoke thought in the mind of those who have asked the question. In some cases the type of question and it's context can prove to be a valid response. Most of the time however it is done b/c either the question didn't seem valid enough to warrant a serious response, so some people assume they can go through, type out a crap answer, and get 2 points; or b/c the individual answering it can't come up with a good enough answer and instead tries to give a rebuttal that hides the fact that they don't have a good answer, but still makes them look like they are more educated on the matter than they really are.

**EDIT**
Here is an example of a pointless question that one could choose to ignore, or engage. For the sake of upholding the example I responded with a short frivolous response that required just as little thought as the question:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070223075131AAceDlS&r=w&pa=FZptHWf.BGRX3OFMhjZXVAuz44Qt9AT.JQUbBIQFSxEJDk_3LhexOAr235taxpLKeapmfuedmQ656eIuUg--&paid=answered#TMd_Wzu1WGMlNgo.dz7gKjObSBzlsTkS0ymjlL7L61BUJErbdWk.

Now many times, people will go through and answer this type of question, because it makes no difference to them one way or the other, and according to Y!A guidelines, it meets all the necessary qualifications to be a question that can be posted, so it really doesn't matter how they answer. It can technically be inferred that one is answering this for the points, but given the silly nature of the entire exchange, one cannot be penalized for it so long as Yahoo! follows it's own guidelines.

As I said in another Thread, there are times when Answering with a Question is the Answer, at other times it is because I don't trust the Motivation of the Questioner in asking his/her Question.

When the question asked is so ridiculous that one must question the sanity of the asker. Or when the question asked makes absolutely no sense.
