for example a drink that would cost .99 cents then you get to the till and find out you have to pay more!

Why not include tax in the price like we do in the UK?

This way they can keep those dollars separate. Oregon doesnt have that tax system. The price of the item is the only thing you pay for at the register. Yearly taxes make up for it thru the state.

We have state and local taxes that are added to the price. The federal income tax is designed so that people who earn more pay a higher percentage. Making the tax a fixed percentage of spending would cause poorer people to pay more of their income in tax than they do now. I am not saying this is a good or bad idea. Just that that is the way it is.

Are you complaining? At least their sales tax (7% in Florida, 6% in Arkansas) isn't as crippling as our 17.5%. Besides, once you've been to the US a few times, you get used to it and automatically figure that if something (in Florida) costs $10, you pay $10.70.
