I upgrade my ram to two sticks of 512. It doesn't seem to have increase my speed in the programs i use. Is there anything else I need to do to make sure my comp recognizes the new memory? After I installed it the computer told me that it had new memory sticks. What should I do?

No! Click start go to Accessories system information /Hardware resources/ Look at the physical memory if the stick are both working it should read 1024.00mb but it should also say available memory underneath you could have maxed it out if its an old machine. ie it will never read the memory if it can only take 512.00 mb

Ok first of all, To increase speed to your programs and your comnputer when loading you need a faster processor not mem or ram sticks. That's just for memory and available ram. Best thing to do is go out pick up a new processor and install it..as to the question of what can you do to make sure it picks it up, is to restart your computer..and there you go.

You can right clcik my computer and select "Properties"

There it should give you basic system info on the first tab.
If the ram shows 1024MB, 1GB, or something around or more than 900MB, then it's installed correctly.

Nothing else needs to be done. RAM is already recognized at boot-up, so if it doesn't, that means you didn't secure the RAM properly.

You probably should have asked Y!A about whether additional RAM would speed up stuff by telling us what you use and what you expect to be speeded up. Games, maybe; large media files, yes; bootup, slightly.

No one needs a gig of RAM to do word processing, nor to do most surfing, so whether you use 256mb or 2 gb, you ain't typing no faster nor will it save any faster, NOR will your RAM make up for the inherent delays caused on the servers you access.
