When primarily black players in the NBA get into a good fight, why is that national news? But, weekly felony level brawls and attacks in the NHL are just a blip on your local news' sports section?

In the NBA blacks get suspended for weeks? In the NHL you get labeled an enforcer and see your stock increase?

1 - Fighting is not allowed in NBA. It is against the rules.

2 - The NBA is very physical. Who do you think took a harder beating in their career Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky? Mario Lemeiux or Kareem Abdul Jabbar? (Of course the average NHL player takes more hits and physical abuse than the average NBA player)?

3. I have lived in Minnesota my whole life and played hockey for over 20 years.

1. Because fights are pretty much allowed in hockey, not in the NBA

2. Truth is that America doesn't care about the NHL

Well I'm pretty sure there hasn't been any felony level brawls in the NHL recently but that's really not the point. Basicly it goes like this. Hockey is a different sport than basketball, in hockey, fighting is allowed at the cost of a penalty. In basketball fighting is not allowed, which is why they get suspended. The reason the NBA brawls are bigger news is because they don't happen as often. It would be pretty rediuclous to make a huge deal out of every NHL fight since they last only for like 30 seconds and half the time they only get like 1 or 2 good punches in. It would be like making national news out of every big foul in basketball. I don't even understand why people compare these things, they are COMPLETELY different. Race doesn't have anything to do with any of this so I'm confused as to why you even brought it up.

One reason the NBA has nationwide coverage on fights is because of players going into the stands and fighting with fans. Or fans coming onto the court.

Fights in NBA happens no more than 2 or 3 times a year. And the what happened in Detriot was not a common everyday occurence.

In the NHL, fighting can def. change the tempo of the game either way. Like everyone and their mother said, it's part of the game.

Why you mention about color, none of us will know. They are more than a hand full of African Americans in the NHL. Take Georges Laraque from the Coyotes. He's black and he's a beast at fighting. He has 22 pts which is ok, but "enforcers" on the other team will think twice before going after a star player on the Coyotes.

So, before you make this a racial column, think outside YOUR own shoes!

The NBA may be physical, but Hockey is more physical. Fighting is a part of hockey. It's a way for an enforcer to retaliate towards a cheap shot on his teammate. Fights in the NHL are a-dime-a-dozen. The NBA does not usually see fighting in games. That's why it becomes major news.

Hockey is a sport wher fighting has evolved into a minor yet vital part of the game. It makes bigger defenders second guess whether they want to rough up smaller wingers, due to the fact they will probably have to have a go with an enforcer later. In basketball, hard contact is not allowed therefore fighting is not necessary to protect smaller athletes.

This goes back to the old conspiracy theory that the NBA (David Stern) wanted to hurt the NHL. Bettman was Stern's assistant, yet Stern recommended him for the NHL knowing Bettman didnt have what it took to keep the NHL amongst the big 4. There is no one in the NHL's front office who knows how to market the game, and until there is a big TV contract with someone other than Versus, the NHL will continue to have back page local news, rather than national headlines.

Fights are a part of hockey history. They have always been there and will always be there. Don't go making this a white/black thing. That is rediculas. Get over it. Stop looking for reasons to play the 'minority card'. What do you care if a couple of crackers want to beat the crap out of each other?

yeah, you're right, it's a race thing - NOT. there are black players in the nhl who fight & it's not "national coverage" & they don't get suspended for weeks.
hockey fights are part of the hockey culture, where as in b-ball, you can't touch the other player with out some puss crying about it. why don't you learn the sport before you make it some race issue.

because fighting in hockey is allowed. they have to sit for five minutes and then they can go play again. hockey is more physical sport than basketball and the players need something to get their team pumped up. they don't do it to get at each other (well unless that player just hit someone on their team really hard and their defending them) they do it to pump up their team

Oh please don't tell me you are saying it is racist now. Fighting isn't part of the NBA. They DON'T HIT EACH OTHER AS A LEGAL MOVE. If you hit someone in the NBA it is WRONG and A FOUL. Hit someone in the NHL and it is a CHECK and is legal, well depending on the hit but you get the idea.
