Try Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse series, and for a real twist try anything by Patricia Highsmith. Highsmith wrote the Mr. Ripley stories and Strangers on a Train that Hitchcock made into a movie in the 1950s. For a little foreign intrigue, try Michael Dibdin
"deliciously creepy" mystery novels from the British author's Aurelio Zen series (set in Venice). The literary tone and stylish prose will appeal to readers who normally ignore whodunits

Marion Babson's books are witty & fun. She writes some with cats (much like Braun, I imagine, though never read), & a series about some aging actresses, which I really liked.
What I've noticed is that British writers tend to concentrate on the methodology of investigating, & can get locked into how mundane it can all get. They're good, but if you want suspense as well throughout the book you would need to check which ones have that. I like Victorian authors, so Anne Perry's series of Inspector Pitt are entertaining, with endings that can have some shock value.
Sara Paretsky's are fun (those featuring V.I. Warshawski), Sue Grafton too. Oh, & Lawrence Block's "The Burgular Who..." series are also funny murder/mysteries.

I've never read Clark or even Christie, so I can't compare them to the author I read. Still, I LOVE Michael Connolly's Harry Bosch series.

Bosch is an LAPD homicide detective and there's about a dozen or so books in the series. I am working my way through it and I LOVE them.

Hope you find something you like!

I've enjoyed Edie Claire's books. And I know a lot of people who like Dick Francis. Also, try Lilian Jackson Braun's "Cat Who..." books - but go for the early ones. The first is "The Cat Who Could Read Backwards."
