Tofu is soy bean curd which makes it a vegetable.
It takes on the tastes of other foods like mushroom does and in some dishes has the texture of meat. Its a vegetable source of protein for those who don't eat meat.

Tofu, also called doufu or bean curd (literal translation), is a food of Chinese origin, made by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the resulting curds into blocks. The making of tofu from soy milk is similar to the technique of making cheese from milk. Wheat gluten, or seitan, in its steamed and fried forms, is often mistakenly called "tofu" in Asian or vegetarian dishes.
So it is not a meat or a vegetable, but comes from soy milk.

It is in the protein group with beans, nuts, and legumes.
It isn't a "meat" but is in the same food group.
