I would like to self teach myself to play clarinet, without regular lessons or a teacher. I've been taught to play the saxophone by a friend of mine who plays sax, and I have been told clarinet and saxophone are similar. Would I be able to teach myself to play clarinet without developing too many bad habits without a teacher and lessons?

No, you would not be able to self-teach without developing many bad habits. I self taught myself and as I play both clarinet and saxophone in the college level I have had to nearly relearn clarinet from the beginning to break every single bad habit I taught myself. Get a teacher, that is what they are there for.

Young lady, get yourself a clarinet teacher! Sax and clarinet are similar instruments because they both have reed mouthpieces, but the clarinet is made of different material , the sax is made of brass. Yes by all means get yourself a good clarinet teacher to learn the basic clarinet fundamentals. Also listen to clarinet players such as Benny Goodman ,Buddy Defranco and Pete Fountain they have many available cds to listen to and also listen to classical clarinet cds such as clarinet concertos. Here endeth the lesson.

I mainly taught myself how to play, with a little help from my sister when the songs got more advanced. It's the easiest instrument I've learned. If you try and can't teach yourself I'm sure you can find someone to help you, or just buy a DVD that shows you how to play.

Good luck =)

i think you could. i've played the violin since i was seven, and now i'm trying to teach myself to play the harp. they aren't similar at all, and i'm having an ok time of it!! if sax and clarinet are similar, then i think it should be easy for you...just make sure you get a basic book, like Essential Elements (if they have those for clarinets...i know they have them for strings) they're color coded for skill level....red is the easiest with the basics...at least it was for violin when i was learning, whihc was 12 years ago.........wow...i feel old saying that.....

I would say that you could do it. Just listen to some recordings of a professional playing so that you know your tone and embechure (sp) are developing correctly.
Best of luck!
