The telescopic antenna is for the f.m. band.
There is a ferrite antenna inside the radio for the a.m. band.
And there isn't a connection for an external a.m. antenna is there?

You need to put up a simple wire antenna ("hook-up" wire will do) as long and as high as you can. Fix the remote end of it to a pole or anything else suitable. Run it into the room where the receiver is and connect the inside end to a coil of wire with many turns on it (you could use an old ferrite antenna winding) and the other end of this coil to the Earth ("ground"). Locate the coil near the radio. You will probably have to experiment a little to find the best position for it.
