I will be visiting Sliema, in Malta soon and wondered if i'm better to hire a car for visiting places in the rest of the island as a friend has said that the buses are "crazy" ans also do not run late into the evening. Have you any advise ?. also any ideas for "must see whilst you there would be welcome. thanks

Safest thing is to be on the Bus.
I didn't bother with car hire, you can get to most places on the Buses and they're cheap.
Last buses leave Valletta about 9.30 pm or so.
Enjoy Malta, it's a great place.
Must see places:
The Pub, in Archbishop St. Valletta, where Oliver Reed had his last mega-binge before he collapsed, then taken to Hospital where he died. Nice little bar. Have one for Ollie.
Mdina, the Silent City.
Gozo, greener and quieter than Malta.
The Cathedrals and churches are opulent and beautiful.
Neolithic monuments older than Stonehenge.
The view from the Upper Baracca Gardens.
Before you go read 'The Kapillan of Malta', a novel by Montserrat.

I stayed at the Fortina Hotel in Sliema, Malta in 2002 and yes the drivers were nuts. There didn't seem to be any driving rules then. There were so many pot holes in the roads so driving was crazy and bumpy!
the buses were interesting! Yellow and quite rickety looking but very cheap. What i liked was seeing the drivers family photos by his driving seat.
Malta is a beautiful part of the world to visit.
Roads may be better now that Malta is part of the EU.

I never used a bus in Malta, its much easier to hire a car, the island is so small you could drive across it in a couple of hours so it makes more sense, the parking is good during the day if your going into towns but at night there will be a struggle as there is never enough space in the popular areas.
I recommend if you looking for a nice day on the beach take a boat across to camino its a tiny island between Gozo and Malta and its just beautiful.
I also went scuba diving in Malta which was a "must" if you are able.

As one native Maltese person put it "In America they drive on the right; in the UK on the left; in Malta in the shade".
We have visited Malta many times and have tried both bus and car. I have to say I prefered hiring a car, as some of the most beautiful parts of the island are tucked away and best reached by car - that way you can stay as long (or as little) as you want in one place.

Visited Malta plenty of times, drivers no worse than anywhere else. Buses very cheap, best way to get round all of Malta

The buses in Malta are very good,some of the drivers are a little crazy. The fare is only 20cents and works till 23.00hrs to the villages, but on weekends they work till 02.00hrs from Paceville, the entertainment mecca

Off hand I didn't know that buses had personality problems but the answers so far suggest they have, but personally I would tend to blame the drivers. It's actually like a smaller version of Paris. You recognise a new vehicle by the fact it has no scratches yet.

Crazy is too harsh a description, eccentric, inventive probably nearer the truth.
Rules of the road, drive on the left sometimes, on the right frequently and in the shade most of the time!

I've heard it too
but the car rental can be even a worse of an idea as their traffic is a little messy too

when i went on holiday to Malta a few years ago a bus crashed into our car... take from that what you will.
