I cannot take hormonal birth control, and am about 4 months postpartum. What are your experiances with copper IUD use? Also, is insertion painful? It seems like it would be....thanks!

In response to a poster below, and for the sake of future answers - I am married, condom use would be nonsensical. Thanks for your answers!!

I had a baby two and a half months ago and I got the copper iud inserted about a month ago. It is awesome. I also won't take hormones because I gain massive amounts of weight and get terrible acne. But the IUD didn't hurt at all going in. The doctor had me come in when I was bleeding ( I was still spotting from having the baby 7 weeks earlier) so my cervix was open. Otherwise they have you come when you are menstruating. That sounds messy to me but the dr. doesn't think twice about it :). About one hour before I took one of the ibuprofen 600 mg they prescribed from giving birth. It was a piece of cake. I had a few tiny cramps the next day and that was it. I am breastfeeding so I don't know how bad the periods will get but my doctor said I probably won't have to experience the bad periods because I am breastfeeding and by the time I stop, my body will be used to the IUD. So my advice is take one of the big ibuprofens they prescribed for after birth pain ( or just take 3 regulars) and go during your period. A pap smear hurts worse than this did. I love it so far.

I've had a Mirena IUD for 6 years. After 15 years on the pill, I couldn't take the hormones anymore. The hormones in the Mirena have not been bothersome at all. I chose the Mirena over the copper IUD because the copper IUD often increases the bleeding and cramping whereas the Mirena IUD decreases it. The insertion hurt (as well as the removal and re-insertion as it is good for 5 years so I had mine replaced last year). My periods were erratic for the first 4 or 5 months, but have been heavenly short since then. I am a childfree woman in my 30s. The doctor didn't question my decision for the IUD at all despite my never having (and probably never wanting to have) children. Good luck finding the option that is right for you.

The ParaGard IUD is still available. Insertion feels like moderate menstrual cramps. Your doctor will have more information I'm sure, but usually taking ibuprofen beforehand helps.

The insertion wasn't painful. The doc gave me a muscle relaxer to take before I went in. There was minimal cramping and spotting afterwards but I felt fine.

Oh, they did away with the copper 7 but if I remember right---the copper corroded away and left infection and incident of unwanted pregnancies? Is this item coated in any way and length of time for use...then you will have to get another method...oh, dear...Insertion was painful but not to the point of not being able to bear it. It was PID and getting put under for the tubal ligation that ended it....Then after x number of years (less than ten)..tubal was useless...more partial surgery...twelve years later ovaries give trouble. Being a woman is hard work to keep up with the health

Very effective, reversible if desired, mildly uncomfortable for a day or so.
