(((((((((((((((The Eagle- Alfred Lord Tennyson ))))))))))))))))))

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

(((((((((((((((((((((((( Winter - Shakespeare))))))))))))))))))))))

When icicles hang by the wall,
And Dick the shepherd blows his nail,
And Tom bears logs into the hall,
And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipped, and ways be foul,
Then nightly sings the staring-owl,
Tu-who;
Tu-whit, tu-who: a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

When all aloud the wind doth blow,
And coughing drowns the parson's saw,
And birds sit brooding in the snow,
And Marian's nose looks red and raw,
When roasted crabs hiss in the bowl,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
Tu-who;
Tu-whit, tu-who: a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

(1) The EAGLE
SIMILE = when a writer says something is LIKE something else. e.g. my cat is LIKE my friend. very weak /childish way of writing.
METAPHOR = when w riter states the thing is something else e.g. my friend comforts me with her purring
The poem has one SIMILE (at the end). The poem has several strong METAPHORS showing how strongly the poet admires the eagle
Verb= a doing word - I run, you speak, I think, Ilike
NOUN = a naming word - a table, an essay, a girl, a boy
ADJECTIVE = describes the noun - a wobbly table, a difficult essay, a blonde beautiful girl, a kind sweet boy.
Adjectives add to the description
The poem uses lots of ADJECTIVES
The use of the ADJECTIVE azure (means lovely blue/ green colour) adds to the beauty.
(2) SHAKESPEARE
RHYME = when the ends of two words sound similar e.g. wall and hall; blow and snow
The poem uses lots of RHYME
RHYTHM - the use of syllables. SYLLABLE - part of a word.
the word 'the' is only ONE syllable. The word 'brooding' has TWO syllables ( 'broo' and 'ding')
Shakespeare makes most lines have similar numbers of syllables which makes the poem easy to say and listen to.
SIMPLICITY = essential in 'good' poetry The poet uses simple words
Note some of words are different to over 500 years ago when this poem was written e.g. keel used to mean - to scrub clean. BUT the poem still sounds good after 500 years that's amazing.
