Check this website. This is very helpful for travellers. (- -,)

Some of the most beautiful things to see in Taiwan are Toroko Gorge, it is a beautiful park and has a natural hot spring river, and of course there is southern Taiwan (Kenting, Kenting Park and Pingtung's beaches). Northern Taiwan has many mountains and a couple of nice towns worth visiting. And of course when you visit Taipei, you must see Taipei 101 and the world trade center. Pick up a tourist map and check out the shopping. You'll find some great bargains, especially in the local markets. If you meet some Americans here, just ask them about what and where to go. We are very friendly and always willing to help others.

This site will give you lots of good info because it links to many of the official sites in Taiwan.

Hope you enjoy your trip.

So many beautiful places.... I could make a long list, but will leave it to you to make a decision. Check out Taiwan Cam:

/english/index.jsp
Note that the address is in 2 lines (another of Yahoo's problems).
Each part of Taiwan has it's own charm.
Sorry - The government fouled up again... you can find out how on your own..... ;-))

West of Taiwan, where the mountains and primative villiage located. Example, Yan Min San. If you're there definately join a tour group, they'll take you to hot spring and tea houses.

-all the above answers and websites are excellent and worth checking out.

-my personal favorites include:

NW-Jiou-Fen- stay in a hotel with an ocean view on the mountain. dont take a tour bus up, the goat path they call a road is an adventure in itself. This is worth motorcycling or getting a SMALL less than 10p bus to take you.

NW again- YangMingShan national park. Go look at the volcanic hotspring vents shooting steam into the air.

W- I-Lan, Hualien, Taroko Gorge, Tai-Dong. rent a car and take the coastal highway or ride on the coastal train. (i hear the train is an awesome scenic view.) The Traditional Arts Museum in I-Lan is well worth visiting!

S- Kenting National Park- caves, big tropical trees and beaches. nuff said. the tourist area may put you off, but once you are in the park and wandering its quite nice.

Center-Nantou county- Sun-Moon Lake- a bit touristy in the service area but some beautiful and easy short walks by the lakeside if you rent a car.

Center- Nantou again- Hui-Sun Park, not a bad forest reserve to check out.

Center again-Hsi-Tou (Shi-Tou) park, another forest reserve area, a bit old fashioned but some good views.

In Taichung- The Metro park is a good walk and quite an amazing getaway for a day if you care to bring yourself a picnic blanket and lunch. No BBQ allowed inside the park but I have seen people doing that in the parking lot... probably you should not.

-Miaoli is very beautiful and has a lot to offer. Shui-Ba national park has some nice areas inside and nearby it.

-I hear that Hsinchu has some amazing areas as well but I have not been yet. try looking for 'Wu-Suh' park - it apparently has some good hiking and beautiful scenery.

-Outlying Islands- Penghu- VERY beautiful and best of all- NOT OVERCROWDED like most places get on weekends here.
Green Island/ orchid Island- I have yet to go but I hear they are fantastic.

KinMen (JinMen) Island- i dunno much about. If anyone has been please share!

I probably have missed ALOT of areas but thats up to you to research- some ideas is all i am putting forth.

****Nothing is beautiful if you take a tour-bus in Taiwan. (<--In my opinion. Safty issues are rampant and they generally exist to hustle you from one trap to the next to get you to blow your cash on crap gifts for people back at home and very little sightseeing is permitted -it is often rushed. Old Taiwanese people dont seem to mind but international tourists probably would be driven mad by the bad KTV onboard for hours at a time.)

If you want to see the real beautiful spots:

Rent a car (have an International license and stay away from the big cities if you do this)

OR get a minivan driver to drive you who will accept your schedule and doesnt mind adjusting to your personal times.
Services like this DO exist but I need to do more research for that. Unfortunately most cabbies english isnt so hot but it may be possible to find something.

Another option is take an express bus to a city near the location you desire then rent a motorbike to do the last bit!

OR if you are hardcore and like to sweat alot and climb mountains on your bike- bike it!

whatever you end up doing have fun, Taiwan has alot to offer if you have the time to do the research and the patience to wade through it all! It also helps ALOT if you have someone around who can read chinese and speak it!
