The scientific advances made as a direct result of space exploration:
Velcro
Solar panels for power
Computer chips
Digital cameras
Space shuttle technology such as ceramic heat shielding (also used for fire prevention and containment)
Carbon filters (for air and water)
Kidney dialysis machines
Athletic shoe design (using space suit technology)
Freeze-dried food
Efficient water purification systems
Cordless power tools
Medical equipment such as CAT scans and MRI
There are a lot more that I haven't listed.
Most of these technologies wouldn't have been developed for humanitarian reasons. It took a political and scientific reason to develop them. But humanity benefits just the same.

It will be billions of years before the sun turns into a red giant, so I don't think we need to worry about it at the moment.
"Space quests" does however initialize research into new technologies which would otherwise not have been done. These technologies does eventually end up making live easier people on earth. New types of food nutrition for instances can help with world hunger etc.

Call me crazy, but I think establishing a colony on Mars to gain more assurance of the continuance of the human species (if things get that bad on the earth) is a darn good reason.
And I think that finding life, a second genesis off this Earth and on another world, is worth exploring and worth the cost.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

The Earth will be uninhabitable when the sun turns into a red giant, and the oceans boil; if we don't move, we die!
