You have to study whatever subject you hope to teach. You need a Master's degree at a minimum and a career professor would need to get a PhD. Not all professors are career professors. Some are employed elsewhere in their field, but teach college classes on the side either because they want the extra money or just because they enjoy teaching (for most technical fields, you sacrifice some money to pursue teaching rather than working in your industry).

An exception might be made for a bachelor's degree if a small college needed professors for freshmen/sophomore level classes, but you wouldn't be a full fledged professor even though you were teaching college classes. (Bigger schools use their graduate students for freshmen/sophomore level classes and just call them Teaching Assistants or something similar).

You have to have a Ph.D. degree in some academic discipline, and most universities require that you have some post graduate work beyond the Ph.D. When you get hired, ytou will begin at the bottom of the rung as an Instructor. After 2 years, or so, they may make you an assistant professor. From undergraduate to the Ph.D. level will take you at least 8 years additional after high school.

Most professors have Ph.D.'s, so that's about 10 years of college (4 undergrad and 6 graduate). You get a Ph.D. in the subject you want to teach.
