1. If you don't know exactly what you want, the chances are that you'd LIKE a laptop but don't NEED a laptop. Laptops are essential for some people who must work "on the road" but for the vast majority of people they'd be better with one or even two desktops and a memory stick. They'd still be in pocket.
Laptops are less powerful than desktops at twice the price, they're more unpleasant to work on, they're less reliable and most are impossible to fix when they go wrong,
2. If you absolutely must have a laptop, the ones to go for are Thinkpads (used to be IBM, now one of the ranges made by Lenovo) and Panasonic Toughbooks.
If you're wise you won't buy either new. You can get an excellent well-specified second-hand Toughbook for way under $400 / £200.

I think that for the money, a HP or Dell is the best Bang for your buck. There are an endless amount of diffrent configurations you can get so you just need to decide what you want in a laptop.

The best laptop for home use and a bit of work is the ACER 3633WLMI. I have got one personally and it has not let me down to date.
The configuration is as follows:-
Intel core 2 duo processor
1GB RAM
120GB Hard drive
256MB Video card.
I think this is a good choice for general and work purposes as I myself use it for a bit of software engineering work. Look out for it and if u buy it enjoy it thoroughly.
Iam sure u won't be let down with ur choice.
Should the laptop decide to ditch u it has got a years international warranty which means u can get it serviced by Acer themselves.
Cheers
Enjoy.

Sorry yet i do no longer trust any of the above. Your utility desires a intense end processor to do animation. The Dell E1505 comes close with ultimate bang on your greenback over Toshiba yet dont be fooled by potential of the processor. this is sluggish on a similar time as a coreduo. i might recommend that in case you are able to wait, seek for a "Conroe" based computer. i think of the computer's version is observed as "Menroe" or some thing. it's going to be observed as Core2Duo. it fairly is fairly the quickest computer you are able to recover from any cutting-edge AMD chip or any CoreDuo computer.

Same as buying a desktop PC, you'll want to decide on what you will be using it for mostly. I have a dell inspiron e1705, which is just fine for most things i use it for. I'm really partial to dual core processors so I thats what I got. It's like buying a car, you'll want to research it a bit to make sure what youre getting is what you want and not what Dell, or Hp or whatever thinks you should have.

I would personally prefer Acer Laptops, I have 2 laptops at my home and both of them are from Acer. Both of them never had given any problem to me.
