First,
From this crash site to the hospital along Goodwin Avenue is 26 miles. Tangerine Way between 4th Avenue and 5th avenue is 10 miles. The ambulance decides that to avoid traffic, it will go the long way, North on Tangerine and East on 5th to get to the hospital.

How much further, in miles, is the Tangerine and 5th Ave route than Goodwin Ave? Show all work involved in getting the answer.

Second (has nothing to do with first one)
A hot air balloon is anchored to the ground with 400 meter cables. About how many meters above the ground is the top of the balloon? Round your answer to the nearest meter.

The cables are 100 meters apart. So 50 to middle to make the triangle

You did not state that the angle opposite hypotenuse is a right angle, so insufficient information is given.

the hypotenuse of the triangle is the 26 mile trek on Goodwin.

one of the legs of the triangle is 10 miles. so:
10^2 + x^2 = 26^2
100 +x^2 = 676
x^2 = 576
x = 24 mi.
so the Tangerine and 5th Ave route is 34 miles, or 8 miles longer.

second:

the hyp is 400m. Note that 400 = 20^2
the distance from the anchor point of the cable to the balloon (x)and the height of the balloon (H) make the legs of the triangle. so:

400 = H^2 + x^2
since 400 = 16*25 = 16(5^2), this is a multiple of a 3,4,5 right triangle.
so the anchor is 16(4^2) = 256 m from the balloon
and the balloon height H = 16 (3^2) = 144 m

right angles abound in nature. get used to recognizing them.

well if it is how i htink it is...

for #1 to find the distance of the second route you would do-

10^2+b^2=26^2
100+b^2=676
-100 -100
b^2=576
(inf square root)
b=24
so... 10+24=34 34-26=8
which mean they traveled 8 more miles

#2

you didn't give enough information

For #1, we'd need to see a map in order to figure it out.

For #2, I think we're missing some information. We'd need to either know how far apart the cables are on the ground, or the angle of elevation.
