Yes, it would definitely boost the morale of the employees and would double, maybe triple productivity.

Sounds good but when actually enacted, it can go wrong very quickly. Up until late last year, I worked at a small hospital that had a few years ago put into place a rewards program for excellent customer service. Worst thing they could have done. People started 'fishing' for recognition. It was like they would only go 'above and beyond' if they knew they'd get some sort of reward for this. Some of these things should have just come natural but no...people began to get greedy for rewards. It was absolutely ridiculous and in the end, customer service and patient care suffered because of it. Those people who truly did go above and beyond refused recognition for what they had done.

it is a system that can be abused and cause dissension among the workers but it also has it's merits.
We were given a cash bonus per store if we earned over the weekly budget (@ 10% of surplus split by the amount of hours each employee worked) the manager earned a management bonus if the store met budget each month, we never had any bickering but we were a good work team.
If managed properly a rewards system can have very beneficial flow on effect for both the workers and the business. To conteract the 'suck up effect' it is probably best that it is performance based only.

Employees can guarantee rewards like promotions etc by always agreeing with the boss, flattering his ego, always taking his/her side, doing what you are told to do even if it is wrong etc. It is called s---ing up to the boss.

Yes, I do. I think all excellent work should be rewarded or appraised.
