It isn't in all households. It may be prevalent in households where children are close in age but if there is a gap in ages it is less likely. Also if children are isolated in rural areas siblings are much closer because they have no other play mates. Families were children are taught to work together do not have a rivalry issue either. It does become an issue when parents compare one child to another or teachers can cause a rivalry too, I do not recommend it because children are all individual even if they do share some similarities. I do not think it is a major issue in most households.

I come from a family of all girls and let me tell ya, if there was some sibling rivalry, it was in my moms house. My mom has 6 girls and we fought about everything. There was alot of underlying jealousy going on, i caught my little sister with my favorite sweater in her backpack, just all kinds of mess. Now that we're all grown and out of the house we dont even talk but once every few months just to catch up but other than that we hated eachother.

Kids vie for their station in the family, and they may want attention from the parents. I think when people live in close quarters, you have personality differences and kids are not quite responsible or mature enough to realize it until they get older.
