I was recently given a used cell phone. It is better than the one I'm currently using so I did what a friend told me.... I switched the SIM card from my phone to the new phone. But, when I do that all the numbers and contacts from the previous owner of the phone show up. I thought that stuff was stored on the SIM card. I realize I'm wrong now but can someone please explain to me how it works and what I need to do to start using the newer phone? Thanks!

The numbers can be stored in two places. Either on the SIM card or directly on the phone. Youy may haved stored your own numbers only to your phone and not your SIM or the previous owner stored his numbers directly to the phone. Try accessing your numbers on the new phone through the SIM (and not directly on the phone). If you don't see them, you need to transfer your numbers from your phone to the SIM card. NO ONE TELLS YOU THIS WHEN YOU BUY THE PHONE. I lost my numbers once because I didn't know this.

The quick answer "No." The long anwer-Yes, ONLY IF you choose to store the numbers and contacts to the SIM card when you put them in and NOT to the phone itself. Most people store them to the phone because it allows for more options (multiple numbers per name, changing icon, pictues etc.) So, if your friend stored all their contacts to the phone they will still be in there and you will either have to 1. delete them manually one by one or 2. do a software reset on the phone which requires a password that your friend would have put in when they recieved the phone as well a possibly requiring a password from the wireless provider they got the phone from originally if they purchased it through a wireless provider.

FYI your new phone have what we call phone memory, and the number or contact that show up is from the phone memory; you can delete it one by one because if you try to delete all of it you will be ask for a security code.

or another way is you go to contacts setting choose memory in use to sim card not phone or both of it. And for your information if we use phone memory we can store more than one number for a single contacts i.e mum mobile number; her office number and so on

hope this helps you......

actually u can store ur contacts in two places viz. sim card and phone memory . Now what happened is that ur new cell phone has got all the previous contacts stored in the phone memory . and the settings is sharing phone and sim memory.

now what u r going to do to get rid of it is that go to the contact settings , normally in its found in the place where names or contacts are kept . and change the settings .... use phone memory -- delete all the contacts and then again go to the settings and -- use sim memory .. u can see ur contacts ... its simple but be careful

if u are still confused delete all the unknown contacts from ur existing settings , lengthy process but safe

Sometimes you save the numbers to the phone, sometimes they are saved to the SIM card. Your SIM card is usable, you'll just have to put in all of your old numbers. You can turn on your old phone w/o the SIM card, the numbers will still be there. This just happened to me.

easiest thing to do is just clear all phone data.. in the menu > settings part.. should be labled master reset/clear (requires password, check manual).. itll reset it back to the factory default clearning everything off.. if not then delete it manually one by one or if your contact book has it.. delete all. making sure not to delete yours too..

phone contacts could be saved on either the phone or the sim.. it is by default saved to the phone.. unless specified by the user, you, to save to SIM or itll ask you where to save on certain phones.
