India was independent in 1947 not 1948.
There were enormous positives, some of them namely the abolishment of Thuggee and Sati, the introduction of a western styled taxation system, English education, English Common Law spruced with the ancient Laws of Manu, the rail connectivity between all the 3 major Presidencies Madras ,Bombay and Bengal, irrigation projects, Civil services, a traditional volunteer army, market economy and democracy.
The British were also the ones who united India and defeated the Mughal Empire paving way for majority governance.

Very few positives.
But one was transport. The East India company were responsible for establishing British in India. They owned vast transport, especially 'Clippers' that were the fastest ships of the time. This did give Indians acess to travel in the world so that it became possible for people such as Gandhi to travel for education.
"In London, Gandhi encountered theosophists, vegetarians, and others who were disenchanted not only with industrialism, but with the legacy of Enlightenment thought. They themselves represented the fringe elements of English society. Gandhi was powerfully attracted to them, as he was to the texts of the major religious traditions; and ironically it is in London that he was introduced to the Bhagavad Gita." ( from Net www.gandhiserve.org/whos_gandhi.)
With-out the established British transport this would have not happened and the great good done by Gandhi may have never happened.

It lasted until 1948 I believe. Then it ended with the British leaving India after the protests of Ghandi.
