Grandkids were playing a game on my computer and the screen kept going black. When we finally cut the computer off the monitor wouldn't come back on. But when I hook up another monitor it will work.

That does sound like a bad monitor, I was going to tell you to hook up another one and see how it works, but it does.
Is it possible that they played with the brightness and contrast settings on the "broken monitor" that can make it look turned off.

You Could Try Playing with the brightness and contrast settings on it and see if that works but it sounds like it may have failed on you and in that case you have no choice but to replace it

They do that after a certain time

It sounds like your monitor has failed. Once this happens it cannot be repaired and will have to be replaced.
