By definition, a piece of land is either an island or a continent, never both. New Zealand is an island, and, therefore, not part of any continent.

Physically, the two main islands and its smaller isles comprising New Zealand do not belong to any continent. Culturally, it is more closely tied to Australia and are often grouped together along with the other Pacific island nations that form "Oceania" which is more of a broad unifying region than a continent.

That's not exactly true, The US is neither a continent nor an island but we are part of the North American continent. Japan is a series of islands that belong to Asia. The Outer Banks of NC belong to NC which in turn belongs to the US which is part of the North American continent.

Wikipedia says: "New Zealand is not on the same continental shelf and so is not part of the continent of Australia but is part of the wider region known as Australasia."

Hello from kiwi land,

Can I just say Tsk Tsk Tsk?..... AUSTRALIA! ha ... I mean really? I am a NZer born and breed Maori (Native NZer my people discovered this country) and NZ isnt a part of... and never will be a part of flipin Australia (big brown country...shaped like a bum) yeah right!....

FIRSTLY, continent means 'continuing large land mass' and New Zealand is made up of 2 prominent islands (the North and South Island) and the lower and smaller stuart island. THEY ARE ISLANDS! we are situated in what is knowen as the south pacific triangle, which also incorporates Hawaii and the Easter islands... Not Australasia but the pacific.
