The advantages are you know your mistakes and learn from it. You also learn that you are wrong in choosing that process. In our life, we all make mistake, but to be able to learn from it and correct the mistakes you've done is the right way to handle it.

Well, it's not an original answer, but you do indeed learn from them. I've made many a mistake in my time. These mistakes have made me stronger, wiser, more understanding, and more able to help others who are going through the same or similar things to those I went through. I think if I can help one other person through a crisis with the knowledge I've gained, then perhaps it was worth going through the (all too many) rotten bits in my life. Great question, and thanks for reminding me of the good that's come of my mistakes.
