You're not going to believe this, but it really does work.
Get yourself a packet of Tang orange juice powder mix. Put the powder in the soap dispenser (with no dishes in the machine) and let the complete cycle run. Your dishwasher will not only smell great after, but if it's dingy and yellowing inside, this will all be gone too.
It's the easiest and cheapest way to fix your problem. It is a solution we use all the time when preparing a home to sell.

Believe it or not, Tang powder does the trick!! Dump about half a cup to a cup of Tang powder in the (empty) dishwasher and run it through a cycle. Doing this periodically (along with cleaning out the filter, of course) will keep the dishwasher odor under control.
(Tang powder is instant orange drink mix)

Run your dishwasher on empty with washing soda in the dispenser. Alternatively, sodium bicarbonate is very good for getting rid of odours.
You can also ues vinegar. Soak a cloth in a 10% vinegar solution - with or without a little washing up liquid - and clean around inside.
All these methods are completely eco-friendly and cheap!

first there should be a strainer or a small basket in the bottem. Lift it out and clean it. Second, check to see if there is any water in the bottem when you open it. If you have a garbage disposal you might be getting some waste water in the washer. The connection hose should have a high spot attached to the wall under the sink to prevent water seeping back into the washer. Look under the sink to see if it has come loose or fallen off the hook.
